2013 Hyundai Sonata – Had me at hello

When the current generation of the Hyundai Sonata was introduced, both consumers and journalists raved about the midsize sedan’s exterior styling.

Even today, the Sonata remains in the eyes of many the most beautiful vehicle within its segment. With the sharp crease running downwards along the doors to the heavily-raked rear windshield, the 2013 Hyundai Sonata looks fast even when parked, yet has a subtle European elegance about its overall design.

The 2013 Hyundai Sonata features a massive center console flowing from the dashboard that is as beautiful as it is easy to learn and use. First seen on Volvo products, the climate controls shaped as a sitting person is probably the easiest way to select air direction. The Sonata Limited, with its leather seats and exclusive piano black trim is particularly impressive.

Like almost all Hyundai products, the interior is full of useful storage areas which are much appreciated in this world of oversized smartphones and different keys for every door. The front seats are well-bolstered and comfortable while the rear seats offer good legroom and elbowroom.

On the road, the 2013 Hyundai Sonata offers a near-perfect combination of comfort and handling. The chassis and suspension is stiff enough to provide dynamic road behavior, but is never harsh or uncomfortable. The Sonata is a great travelling vehicle that feels like it is gliding down the road.

Three different Hyundai Sonata variants are offered, the base Sonata, the 2.0T and Hybrid. The entry-level model is powered by a 2.4 liter GDI 4 cylinder engine that delivers 198 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. Matted to a 6-speed automatic transmission, this engine also provides a combined fuel economy of 7.3 liters per 100 kilometers which is certainly not bad for a vehicle of this size and power. Buyers can opt for the 2013 Sonata SE which cranks out 200 horsepower from the 2.4 liter engine and comes equipped with a sport-tuned suspension and 18 inch wheels that combine to provide a sportier driving experience.

Many midsize sedans offer a V6 engine to buyers looking for more power but not Hyundai. The Korean manufacturer offers instead a more fuel-efficient yet as powerful alternative with the 2.0 liter 4 cylinder turbocharged engine delivering 274 horsepower and a combine fuel economy of only 7.7 liters per 100 kilometers, far better than any V6 engine.

For eco-conscious drivers, the 2013 Hyundai Sonata can also be equipped with a 2.4 liter Atkinson Cycle 4 cylinder engine that, in combination with an electric motor and advanced lithium-ion polymer battery, delivers 199 horsepower. More importantly however, the 2013 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid’s fuel economy is rated at 4.9 l/100 km on the highway and 5.4 l/100 km in the city, providing a total range of 1300 kilometers.

From its humble beginnings, Hyundai as a company has grown into one of the most respected and successful manufacturers in the world. The same can be said about the 2013 Hyundai Sonata and how it has grown from a bottom-feeder within its category into one of the best vehicles in its class. With its beautiful design, numerous engine options and well-designed interior, not to mention its exclusive 5 year/100 000 km new car warranty, the Sonata is certainly a vehicle that should be considered by anyone looking for a midsize sedan.
